Economic Restructuring means finding a new purpose for Newton’s downtown enterprises. By helping existing downtown businesses expand and recruiting new ones to respond to today’s market, the Main Street program helps convert unused space into productive property and sharpen the competitiveness of business enterprises.

Special Events
- 2nd Saturday on Spring Street: Held on the 2nd Saturday of each month throughout the year in downtown Newton.
- LunchFest on the Newton Green: The 2nd annual concert series is scheduled to begin Friday, August 20 and continue every Friday until September 24, 2010 on the Newton Green in downtown Newton. The concert is from 12 Noon to 1:00PM. The general public is invited to pick up a brown bag lunch from a local eating establishment, have their lunch on the Green and enjoy a free music concert.
- Newton Heritage Day: Set for Saturday, October 9, 2010 in downtown Newton. Part of the event will include historic walking tour of Newton historic properties. Plus several presentations from the Six Centuries Club 1700’s through 1900’s & the Sussex County Historian Mr. W. McCabe covering the historic time of Newton’s past including 1700 - 1800’s. Plus an evening concert in front of the Fire Museum. This event will run in conjunction with the United Ways Bike Old Mine Road “BOOMER” Bicycle Tour of the Od Mine Road (beginning on the Newton Green) is set for Saturday morning.
Retail Events: The promotion TEAM has several retail promotions each year including
- SweetHeart Walk (just prior to Valentine’s Day in February)
- St. Patrick’s Day Event (in conjunction with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March)
- Sidewalk Sales Days (July 8, 9, 10)
- Holiday Parade Promotion Day (in conjunction with the annual Holiday Parade, Saturday, November 27, 2010)
- Winter Stroll (Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM)
Supporting Downtown Activities: The promotion TEAM supports all events and activities held in downtown Newton. The following are upcoming events:
- Skyland Juried Art Show and Sale sponsored by the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council and the New Jersey Herald. (Saturday, May 8, 2009. Continues through May 15)
- Newton Memorial Day Parade. Parade runs down Spring Street to Moran Street, ending at Memory Park. (Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10AM)
- Newton Day Festival sponsored by the Great Newton Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Newton. Held on Spring Street in downtown Newton. (Saturday, June 12 from 12 Noon to 4:30PM. The event will continue in Memory Park, with a fireworks display as the finale.)
- A Taste of Newton sponsored by the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce. (Monday, September 6, 2010 7:00PM to 10:00PM)
- Halloween Parade sponsored by the Newton Fire Department (Saturday, October 30 at 6:00 PM)
- Holiday Parade sponsored by the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce (Saturday, November 27, 2010 at 11:00 AM.)

Organization means getting everyone working toward the same goal. The tough work of building consensus and cooperation among the groups that have an important stake in downtown Newton can be eased by using the common-sense formula of a volunteer-driven program and an organizational structure of boards and TEAMs.

Volunteers Volunteer Appreciation Social - In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 27 - May 3, 2008), an evening at Andre’s Restuarant in downtown Newton to honor all Main Street Newton volunteers was held on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Appreciation Certificates were presented to all Main Street Newton volunteers, and 41 of these volunteers received the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Fund Raising Events
Design means getting downtown Newton into tip-top physical shape. Capitalizing on its best assets such as historic buildings and traditional downtown layout is just part of the story. An inviting atmosphere created through window displays, parking areas, signs, sidewalks, streetlights, and landscaping conveys a visual message about what Newton is and what it has to offer.
