 Tour of Art

2 Dates: May 8, 2010 and September 11, 2010

Tour of Art is a week-long juried art exhibition and sale that takes place twice annually.  The event is produced by Main Street Newton in cooperation with Newton’s Spring Street merchants.  Regional artists are selected and matched with local businesses that host the artwork.   Each tour kicks off on a Second Saturday with a full-day artist reception open to the public.  All artwork is on display for one week with a portion of all sales benefitting the host venue and Main Street Newton.   Artists and hosts have declared previous tours highly successful, with approximately 400 visitors during Second Saturday and through the following week.   This signature event is now in its third year.

Event Dates and Application Deadlines

This year’s spring tour is May 8, 2010, and the fall tour is September 11, 2010.  We are accepting applications now through April 3, 2010, in time for the spring tour, and through August 7, for the fall tour.  Artists may apply for both events; however, preferences will be given to new exhibitors, and returning artists may be placed on a waiting list.

Who is Eligible?

We are seeking regional artists working in any medium.  You should be able to demonstrate your professional status through representation of your work.  All work must be original and created by the artist.  Commercially produced works from kits or molds will not be accepted. You must be over 18 years of age, and you must agree to the exhibition guidelines.

How to Apply

  1. Please read all of the eligibility requirements and exhibition guidelines. The application process requires a $25 non-refundable fee.
  2. To apply online for the Spring Tour, visit http://springtourofart2010.eventbrite.com.
  3. To apply online for the Fall Tour, visit www.eventbrite/falltourofart.com.
  4. To download an application in PDF or Word format visit www.mainstreetnewton.org.  Submit your completed paper application by fax (973-940-3179) or mail along with the $25 application fee (non-refundable.)
  5. Submit representation of your work via website or email.

The Selection Process

  1. The Tour of Art Committee will review all applications and representation of work the week of April 19 (Spring TOA) and the week of August 16 (Fall TOA).  Since we have a limited number of venues, priority will be given to new artists.  Returning artists may be wait-listed.
  2. Upon selection, the committee will match you with a host venue and notify you with the host venue contact information.
  3. The host venue will schedule a meeting with you to discuss display of your work and finalize any details or paperwork.
  4. Each artist must submit the application fee, complete the full application and agree to the liability waiver.

Guidelines

Exhibition in Tour of Art is collaboration between the artist and the host venue.  In order for the event to run smoothly, please follow these guidelines.

1.   The host venue will contact you to schedule an interview. It is critical in this interview that the artist and the host are compatible. Either party can request another venue or artist. The artist and the host must set a schedule for installation and review all the guidelines.

2.   All work must be installed by May 7 for the Spring tour and September 10 for the Fall tour.  Work must be in place the day before the tour starts, unless other arrangements are made between the host venue and artist.  Work cannot be accepted during the exhibit dates of May 8-15 or September 11-18.  All work must remain hanging during exhibit dates.

3.   Sold work should not be removed from the exhibit until after 5 p.m. on last day of exhibit.  Shipping and or delivery of sold work, if necessary, is the responsibility of the artist.

4.   The artist is responsible for installing the work in cooperation with the host venue.  All work must be presented in a stable and professional manner. The artist provides easels, racks and pedestals to display their works.

5.   The host venue must facilitate display space for the artist.  The host has the final say as to how the work is arranged, content and quantity of work in the venue.

6.   Artists are required to be in residency during the hours of 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, and/or Saturday, September 11.

7.   All work should be available for sale.  Artists should prepare a complete list of work, medium, size and price. Include labels for your work that correspond to the information on your list.

8.   Hosts and artists must discuss how sales will be handled.  Both parties should discuss the type of payments accepted (checks or cash only or charge, etc.), how sales will be recorded, and how commission will be paid.  As required by the State of NJ, 7% sales tax must be included in the sale.  The artist is responsible for paying all sales tax.

9.   At the end of the exhibition, the artist must remit 20% commission on the net sales of the work, payable to the host venue.

10.        The host must remit half of the 20% commission payable to Main Street Newton, Inc.

Please complete and submit the attached application and waiver of liability.  We cannot accept incomplete applications.
