·         2nd Saturday on Spring Street Special shopping hours and events held on the 2nd Saturday of each month throughout the year in downtown Newton.(Listed below)

 

·         Spring Tour of Art Several Area Artists artwork on display throught many stores and galleries along Spring Street with the opening May 8 and running through May 15 at their new location at 133 Spring Street.

  •  LunchFest on the Newton Green:   The 3rd annual concert series is scheduled to begin Friday, August 20 and continue every Friday until September 24, 2010 on the      Newton Green in downtown Newton.  The concert is from 12 Noon to 1:00PM.  The general public is invited to pick up a brown bag lunch from a local eating   establishment, have their lunch on the Green and enjoy a free concert.

·         Fall Tour of Art The Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council’s 23nd “Skylands Juried Exhibition & Sale” with the opening September 11 and running through September 30 at their location at 133 Spring Street. Additional works of the artist will be on display but throughout 30 other stores throughout Spring Street for a shorter period until September 18.

  • Newton’s Heritage Day: Saturday, October 9, 2010 in downtown Newton.  This event will take the place of the “Old Mine Road Festival” this year we will be celebrating Newton’s Prominent History plus many Antiques dealers will be selling their wares along Spring Street. 
  • A Bicycle Tour of the Old Mine Road (beginning on the Newton Green) is set for Saturday, October 9 in conjunction with the Newton Heritage Day. 
  • Newton Mardi Gras: Lunch and Duinner Specials at many of our fine restaurants

 Retail Events:  The promotion TEAM has several retail promotions each year including

·      Ice Carving Showcase & SweetHeart Walk with Jumble Contest   February 13  a 2nd Saturday event

  • St. Patrick’s Day Event March 20 at 11:30 (in conjunction with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March) 
  • 2nd Saturday “Spring Tour Of Art” Event.  Saturday, May 8, 2010. Continues through May 15, 2010
  • Newton Memorial Day Parade.  Monday, May 24, 2010 at 10AM a Parade runs down Spring Street to Moran Street, ending at Memory Park with the grand finale of fireworks at sunset.
  • “Newton Day Festival” June 12, 2010 sponsored by the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Newton.  Held on Spring Street in downtown Newton.   from 12 Noon to 4:30PM.  The event will continue in Memory Park, with a fireworks display as the finale.
  • Sidewalk Sales Days July 8, 9, 10
  • 2nd Saturday Tour of Art Many artists’ artwork to be displayed throughout Spring Street from Saturday September 11 through September 18.

On January 23, 2008 the Main Street Newton Program was officially designated as part of the Main Street New Jersey Program.

  • Main Street Newton depends on volunteers who are dedicated and willing to work on events and activities to make the downtown a place where families will gather, shoppers will stroll the streets, festivals and entertainment will flourish and great food will entice neighbors from far and near. Specific Tasks Potential Volunteer Projects

· Building Inventory: work with the Econimc Restructuring Team to inventory the buildings dimensions and the rents requested

· Parking Study: Work with the Economic Restructuring Team doing a parking inventory of our three major parking lots plus on street

· Merchant Survey: Brief survey all the merchants on Spring Street with a survey provided by Main Street (Economic Restructuring Team).

· Shoppers Exit Survey:  Interview shoppers along Spring Street as the walk from one shop to another (Economic Restructuring Team).

· Commercial Building Readiness Assessment:  Photograph each vacant building  along Spring Street Interior and exterior and describe the condition(Economic Restructuring Team).

· Block conditions: Walk the district and take photographs to reference your comments about the overall condition of buildings and other elements that effect our visual appeal.

· Gateway assessment: All roads lead to Newton, do a visual survey of all roads as they lead you into downtown Newton looking for signage to our shopping district and parking areas

· Office work: Including Q-Books, writing press releases

· Goodwill Ambassadors: Walk the shopping district offering assistance to the shoppers with store locations and other local information to make their shopping experience more enjoyableStreet

Economic Restructuring means finding a new purpose for Newton’s downtown enterprises. By helping existing downtown businesses expand and recruiting new ones to respond to today’s market, the Main Street program helps convert unused space into productive property and sharpen the competitiveness of business enterprises.

Meeting Schedule:  The MSN Economic Restructuring TEAM meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 5:00PM at the office of Main Street Newton in downtown Newton.

Plus several presentations from the Six Centuries Club 1700’s through 1900’s & the Sussex County Historian Mr. W. McCabe covering the historic time of Newton’s past including 1700 - 1800’s. Plus an evening concert in front of the Fire Museum. This event will run in conjunction with the United Ways  Bike Old Mine Road “BOOMER” Bicycle Tour of the Od Mine Road (beginning on the Newton Green) is set for Saturday morning.

Organization means getting everyone working toward the same goal. The tough work of building consensus and cooperation among the groups that have an important stake in downtown Newton can be eased by using the common-sense formula of a volunteer-driven program and an organizational structure of boards and TEAMs. 

Meeting Schedule:  The MSN Organization TEAM meets on the third Thursday of each month at 9:00AM in the  Main Street Newton Office 116 Spring Street.

Volunteers                                                                                                                                          Volunteer Appreciation Social - In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 27 - May 3, 2008), an evening at Andre’s Restuarant in downtown Newton to honor all Main Street Newton volunteers was held on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.  Appreciation Certificates were presented to all Main Street Newton volunteers, and 41 of these volunteers received the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
